February QuickStart Sessions for solidThinking

solidThinking Product Day on November 2, 2009 Ludwigsburg, Germany

You are invited to the first solidThinking Day on November 2nd at the “Forum am Schlosspark” in Ludwigsburg, Germany.
The information day is part of the 3rd European HyperWorks Technology Conference 2009 (www.altairhtc.com/europe), which you might be visiting (register is free).
The solidThinking day is dedicated to all creative trend-setters of the design community in Europe and will offer networking with the developers of solidThinking and solidThinking Inspired and experiences from real customer use cases.
The solidThinking day will start at 11.00 am on November 2nd and will include workshops and papers from solidThinking spokespeople and users. It will end at 18:00 with the Welcome reception of the 3rd EHTC with refreshments, to which all attendees of the solidThinking day are invited.
Ludwigsburg is located in Baden-Wuerttemberg, not far from Stuttgart. Baden-Wuerttemberg is one of the largest tourist states in Germany. It is situated in the very heart of Europe and is just as famous for its delicious cooking as for being the industrial home of globally renowned companies like Daimler, Bosch, Porsche, Boss, Adidas or Puma.
Ludwigsburg has a lot to offer. In the baroque centre of the town you can see the baroque quarters, which host the birth houses and residences of famous poets i.e. Morike and Schiller, you can stroll around in the castle park or go shopping and try out the local restaurants.
The solidThinking Information Day is FREE of charge.

Tip: Using the Shadowcatcher shader

The Shadowcatcher is a unique shading property that allows the object(s) with this particular material to be invisible in the rendering but stll accept and display any shadows cast upon them. This is typically used to integrate a 3D object into a photographic background where the object would not normally have a shadow.

sc1

To use it, you can add on or more ground planes to your scene where you want the shadow to be cast.

sc2
After selecting the ground plane(s), open the Shading panel and choose the Surface Material tab. Right click the Reflectance shader component to assign the Shadowcatcher type. Various parameters are available. When the scene is rendered, shadows will be realistically cast upon the ground plane(s).

CAAD futures 2009: FREE solidThinking Workshop “Computational Inspiration and Exploration”, June 15th, Montreal, Canada

caad09Arcitects and product designers are in constant search of inspiration.

Architectand product designers are in constant search of inspiration.
Nature has always been a source of inspiration, and particularly biological forms. While biological forms tend to be aestheticallyinteresting, they also tend to be efficient and highly functional because they are the product of environmental pressures.
Today, new technologies enable architects and product designers to simulate some of the processes and physical laws in nature with software algorithms, thus helping to generate forms in response to environmental stimuli.
What challenges and opportunities arise from defining environmental conditions and interpreting the forms that are generated? How do methods such as these complement traditional methods?
The FREE half day workshop will describe, with practical and visual examples, exciting new methods that have now emerged for architects and designers to generate and explore forms that are aesthetically interesting, often unexpected, and at the same time well adapted to their intended function.
Each participant should bring their own laptop.
Attendees at this workshop will be granted a 3-month license to solidThinking and the new morphogenesis™ form generation technology which will be unveiled for the first time during CAADFutures 2009. and product designers are in constant search of inspiration.

Tip: Environment Lighting

The quality of a rendering picture often depends on the lighting of the scene. Images can be used as environments (via the “environment” light shader) which illuminate a scene (allowing digitally created objects to be rendered with lighting conditions exactly matching some real world scene).

Although HDRI Images (.hdr) are not required for the environment lighting technique, they can can represent a much higher range of intensity values than traditional image formats, which only represent the range of intensity values which can be displayed on a computer display.

The picture shows how lighting changes with different images used as environments.
